Death and despair pushed Cristina away from Seattle Grace at the start of the season on "Grey's Anatomy." This week, it pushed her back toward it. She finally had someone who seemed to understand her in the form of Dr. Thomas. He'd become a sort of mentor-figure for her, as well as a close friend in the short time they'd known one another.
The older doctor bestowed a great compliment on her, calling her the "surgeon of her generation" during a complicated surgery they were performing together. But then, in the middle of the procedure, he stopped responding to her and collapses.
Dr. Thomas died on the operating room floor. Cristina successfully completed the surgery, but the loss spurred her decision to move back to Seattle. There she greeted Meredith drunk on her doorstep. Perhaps together they can succeed in moving beyond their tremendous losses more successfully than they've been able to apart.
"Grey's Anatomy" continues on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
