Miami-Dade Animal Services Hosts Dog Sweater Drive (PHOTOS)

There's no telling what kind of winter South Florida will have this year. But as the Northeast getting slammed by not one but two hurricanes in two years, we won't be surprised if we get an uncharacteristically cold one -- climate patterns be damned.

Local animal shelters are also preparing for the worst by holding a dog sweater drive -- yes, you read that right -- Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department in coordination with the Miami-Dade County Public Library System is looking for knits for their canines.

November 20 through December 20, you can drop off new and gently used dog sweaters at any MDPLS branch library. ASD's Xiomara Mordcovich points out that children-sized sweaters can fit larger shelter dogs, so they welcome drop-offs of kids' knits too.

Local shelters have their hands full. Each year, the county ADS receives over 30,000 pets.

And it's a good year to be a shelter dog in South Florida. Not only will they be outfitted in donated sweaters come chilly weather, Miami-Dade voters just approved a tax that would turn the county's animal shelter into a no-kill facility.
