The early sales figures are in, and People magazine has a hit on its hands with its "Sexiest Man Alive" issue featuring Channing Tatum.
"The early numbers show that People had a huge increase in market share with its 'Sexiest Man Alive' issue," one weekly-magazine editor-in-chief who has seen the statistics tells The Huffington Post. "Remember, the editors at People are not just picking a man who is sexy; they are also picking a guy who can sell magazines. It looks like they made a great choice."
Another weekly editor tells me there is no doubt People is having a great week.
"In this market, you have to fight for sales every week," that editor says. "Picking the right cover is the difference between being a hit or failure. Weekly-magazine covers that feature men normally do not perform well. It's a female celebrity-driven market, so it's always with great interest that everyone looks at the sales for this issue."
While Tatum is the sales hero of the week, the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" cast are not faring well at all. As one news director tells me, “don't expect to see NeNe Leakes or Kim Zolciak on the cover of [another] magazine anytime soon."
A spokesman for Us Weekly, the magazine that is featuring the "Real Housewives" on its cover, did not respond to calls for comment.
"We have not seen any numbers yet, but will circle back when we do. Sadly, I can't comment on numbers we haven't received," says a representative for People.
