Victor Cruz superó una infancia difícil en la ciudad de Paterson, Nueva Jersey, llegó a la NFL, se convirtió en una estrella y ganó el Super Bowl, pero nunca olvidó su origen, ni las necesidades de su localidad. Es precisamente su pasado de esfuerzo y sacrificio el que lo impulsa en el terreno de juego domingo a domingo con los Gigantes de Nueva York.
"Mi vida aquí en Paterson fue muy difícil, cuando estaba pequeño vi mucha violencia, tenía amigos que estaban en peleas, pero salí. Ahora uso esos momentos y recuerdos para hacer las cosas un poco mejor".
De raíces puertorriqueñas, Victor charló con HuffPost Voces y narró la trascendencia que tuvo su madre en su exitosa carrera y su formación como un miembro orgulloso de la comunidad hispana en Estados Unidos.
"Mi mamá es la mujer más importante en mi vida, me enseñó a conducirme en la vida, en mi desarrollo. Me ayudo a mantenerme enfocado en mi carrera".
¿Ella te inculcó tus raíces latinas, te enseñó español?
"Fue mi abuela, ella fomentó mis raíces, viví con ella y mi mamá hasta los ocho años. Ella siempre hablaba español, me lo enseño, la cultura, la comida. Me enseñó las costumbres latinas y puertorriqueñas".
Ahora eres un icono para la comunidad hispana, ¿Cómo te hace sentir eso?
"Me siento bien, trato de hacer las cosas lo mejor posible para que todas las personas que ven lo que estoy haciendo sepan que es posible, para que los niños vean a Victor Cruz y traten de hacerlo, solo cosas positivas, si soy un ídolo ojalá los inspire".
¿A ti quién te inspiró como jugador cuando eras niño?
"Michael Irvin, era un wide receiver de los Dallas Cowboys muy bueno que me inspiró".
¿Y a ayudar, quién o qué te motiva?
"Me inspira toda la gente que vive en mi comunidad, que ahora me ve en la televisión, ahora que soy jugador profesional de fútbol, yo quería hace algo por la gente que no tiene comida o ropa aquí en Paterson, por esa gente que no puede valerse por si misma".
¿Cómo te reciben aquí ahora que eres campeón del Super Bowl?
"Tengo los mismos amigos, a ellos no les importa que soy un campeón de fútbol, son mis amigos y me tratan igual que como cuando teníamos 16 o 17 años. Es importante para mi, para recordar de donde vengo, para recordar lo difícil que fue llegar".
Después de dos derrotas en fila, ¿Cómo está el equipo?
"Nos sentimos bien, estamos listos para enfrentar los últimos seis juegos, todo el equipo concentrado".
La dupla Manning-Cruz, ¿Está igual de conectada que la temporada pasada?
"Si, en la práctica que tuvimos ayer, Eli y yo estamos en la misma página, listos para hacer cosas buenas en el juego de Día de Acción de Gracias ante Green Bay y vamos a ver que pasa".
Se ha hablado mucho de un nuevo contrato, que mejore tus condiciones en la organización, ¿Cómo van las pláticas?
"Estoy bien, listo para jugar los últimos seis juegos. Creo que los contratos hay que verlos una vez que la temporada ha terminado".
¿Podrán regresar al gran domingo?
"Si, creo que tenemos un equipo bueno para regresar al Super Bowl. Comienza con estos seis juegos, luego playoffs y veremos que pasa".
Tu festejo de baile de salsa es muy popular, ¿Piensas cambiarlo?
"Lo voy a seguir haciendo, a todo mundo le gusta, lo veo positivo".
Camino a las festividades por el Día de Acción de Gracias, Cruz acudió a Eva's Village, un centro de ayuda en Paterson, para hacer una donación de comida de 5,000 latas de sopa Chunky Campbells, de la que es portavoz e imagen de la campaña, Consentido de Mamá.
