Chicago Gang Funeral Shooting: 1 Dead, 1 Critical After South Side Incident

1 Killed, 1 Wounded In Shooting Outside South Side Funeral

Two men were shot, one fatally, following a funeral for an alleged gang member on the city's South Side Monday.

The shooting took place just before 12:30 p.m. outside St. Columbanus Church in the 300 block of East 71st Street, Fox Chicago reports.

One of the shooting victims was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, while the other was listed in critical condition, according to the Chicago Tribune. Police say both men were known gang members and convicted felons.

The church is located across the street from the funeral home where James Holman, 32, was laid to rest. Holman, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, was fatally shot in the 6000 block of South Michigan, near his home, on Nov. 19.

"Rooftop pastor" Rev. Corey Brooks, who had presided over the funeral, tweeted about the chaos:

Chicago is coming off a holiday weekend where four men were fatally shot, one fatally stabbed and at least 20 people wounded in shootings, the Sun-Times reports.

Chicago's homicide rate surge this year prompted New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly on Monday to criticize President Barack Obama for his reaction -- or lack thereof -- to gun violence in his hometown.

"Maybe the city most affected (by guns) is Chicago. The President’s hometown. But barely a peep out of him," Kelly said.

Meanwhile on Monday, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said that the city's crime-fighting strategies have successfully decreased the city's murder rate compared to its dramatic surge in the spring.

"There has to be a recognition that we're doing better," McCarthy said during a news conference Monday, WGN reports.
