Domino Sugar Donates 30,200 Pounds Of Sugar, Coffee Service Canisters And Drink Mixes To New Jersey Storm Victims

Domino Sugar is donating 30,200 pounds of its products to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey to help victims of the massive storm called Sandy, the company announced Monday.

Trucks carrying the Domino products -- including brown, powdered and granulated sugars, coffee service canisters and powdered drink mixes -- left Baltimore's Inner Harbor refinery Monday for storm-ravaged New Jersey.

"For our company, Hurricane Sandy hit home," said Stu FitzGibbon, the Baltimore refinery's manager, in a statement. The Domino plant in Yonkers, N.Y., was damaged by the storm and offline for 13 days, he said.

"I'm proud to say our employees, both in Baltimore and in New York, stepped up, shuttling parts and supplies back and forth and increasing our Baltimore refinery's output by as much as 20 percent to fulfill our customers' orders," FitzGibbon said.

Domino is partnering with the American Red Cross in its storm-relief efforts, the company said.

Tim Vogel, the director of food sourcing for the Community Food Bank, said the Domino donation would be useful for the nonprofit, which provides large numbers of hot meals and freshly baked products to those in need.

"We've a big baking program here," Vogel said. "There's a lot of opportunity to use the sugar and that's the kind of donation we don't get very often."
