Brandon Marshall: Viagra Among Drugs NFL Players Will Use To Get Performance Edge

Can Viagra Help NFL Players (On The Field)?

Although a rash of positive drug tests, reportedly caused by Adderall, have revealed the persistence of PED use in the NFL despite more stringent testing procedures, Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall still managed to turn a few heads with a quote about just how far players would go for an edge.

"I know guys, it is such a competitive league, guys try anything just to get that edge. I’m fortunate enough to be blessed with size and some smarts to give me my edge," said Marshall, via Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune. "But some guys, they’ll do whatever they can to get an edge. I’ve heard of some crazy stories. I’ve heard (of) guys using like Viagra, seriously. Because the blood is supposedly thin, some crazy stuff."

Marshall was likely on the topic of performance-enhancing drugs because the Chicago Bears are preparing to play a Seattle Seahawks defense featuring two players facing suspensions: Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner. Both players reportedly tested positive for adderall and both will be on the field with Marshall on Sunday as they appeal the drug bans.

In April 2011, wide receiver Louis Murphy, then with the Oakland Raiders, was arrested for possession of Viagra without a prescription in Florida. There was no reason to believe that he was using the medication to increase his on-field performance.

That there are scientific reasons why Viagra could be used as a performance-enhancing drug, didn't stop people on Twitter from having fun with Marshall's quote.
