John Heilemann jokingly called Senator Lindsey Graham "a woman" on Wednesday's "Morning Joe."
The panel was discussing the bond between Senators John McCain, Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham — who are nicknamed "the three amigos" — now that Lieberman is about to retire. McCain and Graham have brought Senator Kelly Ayote, a Republican from New Hampshire, in as the third member of their group. She, Graham and McCain met with U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on Tuesday.
"How did they pull Kelly Ayote into this trifecta after Lieberman starts running for the doors?" Joe Scarborough exclaimed on Wednesday, laughing. "Do they have to have three of these people at all times?"
Heilemann joked, "They need a third amigo at all times. So now they have — now two of the three are women — now at least one of the three are women."
Scarborough and Heilemann started laughing hysterically. Scarborough had to turn around in his seat, while co-host Mika Brzezinski turned to Andrea Mitchell to continue the discussion. Heilemann's line was edited out of the second airing of "Morning Joe" at 8 a.m.
