MIAMI -- A college student who was beaten at a gas station near campus Sunday says she was the victim of a hate crime.
Nacrisha Cash, 19, told WSVN she believes her style of dress and sexual orientation prompted the assault, which left her with cuts and bruises on her face and lips.
According to a police report, the incident began when the Florida Memorial University student and a friend sought snacks at a Citgo station on NW 42nd Avenue in Miami Gardens.
After watching Cash argue with the cashier because the women weren't buying enough merchandise to justify a debit card purchase, the suspect, who was in line behind them, reportedly yelled, "Shut the fuck up or I'll fuck your fat gay ass up."
The suspect then made a purchase and followed the pair outside, where Cash says he then punched her several times in the face and kicked her as she lay on the ground.
"He told me, 'Oh you wanna be like a dude? I'm gonna beat you like one,'" Cash said. (Watch video above.)
Miami Gardens Police spokesman Bill Bamford told HuffPost investigators are still taking statements and will view surveillance video from the gas station when the owner returns to town later this week.
The alleged remarks make the ensuing assault and subsequent criminal investigation exceptionally more serious.
"Once the comments were made about her sexual orientation, it does raise the bar to a hate crime," Bamford told WSVN.
