'Ugly Sweater Holiday Campaign' Raises Awareness, Funds For Stand Up To Cancer

It’s inevitable: You will get a big, cheesy holiday sweater this season that someone who loves you a lot probably hand-stitched. But this year, you should actually wear the bulky thing.

Starting Dec. 1, disgruntled gift-recipients will have good reason to wear the warm, stupid-looking tops they never asked for. The “Ugly Sweater Campaign” invites supporters to sport their un-trendy holiday sweaters to raise funds and awareness for Stand Up To Cancer, a nonprofit that sponsors groundbreaking treatments and therapies.

Participants can get involved by wearing an unbecoming article of clothing around town and asking people to donate to a fundraising page. Advocates can also throw ugly sweater parties and request obliging guests to give some money to the cause.

"This campaign gives everyone a chance to do something good while embracing a favorite holiday tradition -- sporting their favorite ugly sweaters," Pam Williams, member of SU2C’s Executive Leadership Council, said in a press release. "It's time to pull those ugly sweaters out of mothballs and put them to work at office parties, family gatherings and even at the mall. This campaign is our way of saying, 'Hey cancer, it's gonna get ugly.'"
