On Thursday, the New York Post reported that CIA chief David Petraeus had admitted that he "screwed up royally" in a recent letter to a friend.

“I paid the price (appropriately) and I sought to do the right thing at the end of the day,” Petraeus wrote to retired Brig. Gen. James Shelton in the Nov. 20 letter, according to the Post.

Petraeus -- who resigned in early November when news of his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell went public -- also suggested that his wife of 37 years, Holly, would stick by his side.

“Team Petraeus will survive though [I] have obviously created enormous difficulty for us," Petraeus wrote. "Holly is, however, once again demonstrating how incredibly fortunate I was to marry her.”

We doubt that Petraeus employed the now infamous phrase -- "I screwed up royally" -- when he sat down with Holly to talk about the fate of their marriage; still, it made us wonder: what do you say to the spouse you've cheated on when you want to save your marriage?

With that in mind, we asked our followers on Facebook and Twitter to share with us the one thing they thought an unfaithful spouse should tell their partner after infidelity.
