Weekend Box Office: 'Killing Them Softly' Opens Quietly While 'Twilight' Maintains Lead

Brad Pitt's Big Mistake

Brad Pitt's latest movie, "Killing Them Softly," isn't exactly killing it at the box office.

Directed by Andrew Dominik ("Chopper"), "Killing Them Softly" has been well-received by critics, but heavily panned by audiences. The movie earned an uncommon F CinemaScore from those that saw it, and brought in $7 million for its opening weekend. This low amount kept "Killing Them Softly" from charting in the top five for the weekend, and made it Brad Pitt's worst live-action wide-release opening.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" continued its box office run, taking the No. 1 spot for the third week in a row. The final "Twilight" film made $17.4 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic gross to $254.6 million. Globally, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" has made over $700 million.

"Skyfall" and "Lincoln" both maintained their spots from last weekend, coming in second and third, respectively. "Skyfall" made $17 million this weekend for a total of $246 million stateside. Globally, "Skyfall" has out-earned "Twilight," reaching a total gross of $869 million as of this weekend. "Lincoln" took No. 3 with a $13.5 million weekend, bringing it to $83.7 million since opening.

Holiday flick "Rise of the Guardians" and Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" also held over from last weekend, reaching No. 4 and 5, respectively. The animated "Rise of the Guardians" brought in $13.5 million this weekend for a total of $48.9 million. "Life of Pi," an adaptation of the celebrated novel, made $12 million for a domestic gross of $48.4 million.
