Newt Gingrich On 'Parks And Rec': NBC Comedy Writes In Politician

Newt Gingrich's Surprise 'Parks & Rec' Cameo

Newt Gingrich will make a cameo appearance on "Parks And Rec," but he wasn't supposed to. While filming on location in Indianapolis at St. Elmo Steak House, the cast and crew ran into Gingrich.

“Parks and Recreation” co-creator Mike Schur, the episode's writer and director had a quick meeting and wrote Gingrich into the script.

“It was a completely random chance,” Schur told the "Indianapolis Star." “But you can’t pass up on an opportunity like that."

Gingrich told ABC News the cameo was "great fun." "Always fun to do something like that," he said. "I had a small role on a Candice Bergen show many years back.”

Gingrich joins Vice President Joe Biden and Sens. John McCain, Barbara Boxer and Olympia Snowe as Season 5's political guest stars. The episode, which will air in January, will also feature Indiana Pacers players Roy Hibbert and Miles Plumlee.

Series star Rob Lowe took to Twitter to share the news. According to Gingrich, the two hit it off. “It was especially great chatting with Rob Lowe," he said. "We have a mutual interest in General Grant and the Civil War.”
