'Golden Spike Company' Expected To Announce Commercial Travel To Moon Starting In 2020

Moon Tourism Venture Expected From Little-Known Firm

An organization that claims to be "over the Moon" when it comes to space travel may actually be aiming right for it.

If the audible buzz of Internet rumors are to be believed, the Colorado-based Golden Spike Company is expected to announce its plans to for a commercial venture to send private clients to the moon at a Dec. 6 press conference.

"The Golden Spike Company invites you to attend a game-changing announcement about the future of commercial human space travel to the Moon," reads a copy of the invitation provided to Wired. "Executives from the company will describe the team, the mission architecture, and the business model."

According to NASASpaceflight.com, the company's debut in commercial travel to the moon could arrive as soon as 2020.

The website also included unconfirmed reports that Golden Spike has a long-term goal of establishing a small manned outpost on the moon's surface.

Unlike other lunar travel rumors (looking at you, Newt Gingrich), Golden Spike has purportedly assembled an impressive team to lead the effort. i09 reports the company was founded by Alan Stern, a former top-ranking official at NASA.

It appears the company's website is kept under lock and key (likely pending Thursday's announcement). For the time being, the Golden Spike Facebook page and Twitter feed may satisfy the curious.
