Not to be a total Grinch, but this Christmas tree is just way too expensive.
Breezewood Gardens, a gardening business in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, is home to an 18-foot Christmas tree with a $2,500 price tag, Fox 8 Cleveland reports. Hand picked from the North Carolina woods, all the trees at Breezewood Gardens are meant to satisfy the customer looking for "the perfect Christmas tree," says owner David Kay.
By contrast, a Christmas tree -- not the plastic ones -- costs the average American around $41.50, according to Forbes.
Kay said that the ideal tree will have a straight trunk and be "full all the way around." Trees range from smaller $40 trees, all the way to the the $2,500 Goliath. The most popular tree during the holidays is the Fraser fir, according to a Breezewood Gardens employee interviewed by Fox 8 Cleveland.
Of course, there are Christmas trees that make Breezewood's price tags seem reasonable but they come with more than just pine needles. For example, a 20-foot tree made entirely of diamonds and crystal owned by Soo Kee Jewellery store was valued at $1.6 million in 2007. Meanwhile, the 2010 Christmas Tree at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi had an estimated value of $11.4 million -- and that's only counting its decorations!
Breezewood Gardens isn't the only business getting into the highly lucrative business of Christmas trees. The Living Christmas Company, a California based business, offers a variety of living trees that customers can rent online. The trees are delivered to the home and then picked up and brought back to a nursery alive once the season is over. Families also have the option of "adopting" a tree and getting the same tree back year after year. While cheaper than Breezewood's trees at $40 to $345, The Living Christmas Company was featured in a Dec. 4 episode of reality television series "Shark Tank."
Indeed, the Christmas tree business is booming. 25 million trees were predicted to be bought in 2011, totaling an estimated $3.4 billion spent on trees that year.
