Office Alcoholics: Should Bosses Fire Or Help Drunk Employees?

Should Bosses Fire Or Help Alcoholic Employees?

Business owner Barry Weinstein came on HuffPost Live Wednesday to tell his story of firing an employee for having a drinking problem.

Weinstein told host Janet Varney, "If I was this mans friend, I would feel a responsibility. If I was this guy's father or family member, I would feel a responsibility," Weinstein said. "But, I have a responsibility to my company."

Do bosses have an obligation to help workers suffering from alcoholism, or duty to do what's best for their business?

"Sending a person to rehab, it might be good for the person who is suffering from the disorder. But look at what happens to the idea of fairness in the office or the idea of responsibility. It creates tension," he said. "It's very hard for a business owner to maintain the responsibility of the employee's private life and the responsibility to the company."
