Considering that New York City is one of the most diverse places on the planet, it's not surprising that just 51 percent of New Yorkers speak only English at home, according to the most recent data provided by Census Bureau's American Community Survey.

The other 49 percent also speak languages from across the globe. Spanish and Chinese are, unsurprisingly, the leading second tongues of the Big Apple.
