With 2012 coming to a close, the folks at Google have released their annual Zeitgeist report revealing what the world, and New York, have been searching the most over the past year.

In the Big Apple, most of the terms are rather predictable (NY Times, NY Knicks, etc.) but 2012 brought on some newcomers including Hurricane Sandy, which usurped the MTA as the most Googled search term of the year.

The storm even introduced LIPA to the annual list, most likely due to the power company's much criticized performance in the aftermath of Sandy.

All this compared to 2011's Hurricane Irene which only peaked at number six. Unsurprising however, considering the storm was made fun of for being overhyped.

Terms that dropped off from the 2011 list include NJ Transit, EZPass, and DMV NY. Perhaps New Yorkers are driving and commuting less? So much to deduce!

(Also on the 2012 list, SoulCycle NYC. Really?)
