There's nothing like a live puppy cam to put you in the holiday spirit.
YorkieCam, The Pet Collective's most recent 24/7 live stream, features one girl and two boys. The girl is the smallest of the pups, and a ribbon is tied around one of the boys for identification purposes. The puppies were just 12 days old when the video stream launched Thursday. According to The Pet Collective, the puppies appear healthy from their initial vet checkups, and are under the constant care of professionals.
While watching these squirmy guys on a video is quite simple (and thoroughly enjoyable!), caring for a pet in real life is a much more complex, long-term responsibility. If you're planning to gift an actual pet this holiday season, make sure the recipient is aware and ready to raise a pet. When pets are given as gifts to people who are not ready or willing to make the lifetime commitment of raising an animal, the animals may later be returned to overburdened shelters.
PETA offers the following tips to determine if a pet should be given as a gift:
Will your loved one have the time and patience to exercise and housetrain the animal? Is he or she prepared to pay for food, accessories (such as toys, grooming supplies, leashes and harnesses, and bedding), inoculations, and veterinary care, including spaying or neutering, flea treatment, deworming, and emergency care?
If you do choose to give an animal as a gift, consider adopting a pet in need of a home, and be sure to spay/neuter them. According to the Humane Society, about 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year in U.S. shelters alone.
