Newark Mayor Corey Booker said last Monday that he supports medical marijuana in New Jersey and that he wants to "go beyond that," and move toward a complete overhaul of state and federal drug policy.
Booker's comments came during an appearance on HuffPost Live in which he discussed his political future, including a possible run for New Jersey governor in 2013.
Booker has been an outspoken critic of federal drug policy in the past.
"The so called War on Drugs has not succeeded in making significant reductions in drug use, drug arrests or violence," Booker said during an "Ask Me Anything" with Reddit users. "We are pouring huge amounts of our public resources into this current effort that are bleeding our public treasury and unnecessarily undermining human potential."
