New York Times Staffers Betting On Mark Thompson's Future, New York Post Reports

New York Times staffers have reportedly placed bets on the company's newly-appointed CEO, Mark Thompson. The New York Post reported on Monday that a source indicated that some employees have entered a pool, betting on how long Thompson will last at the Times.

Thompson, who previously served as director-general of the BBC, assumed the role as Times CEO in November amidst scandal. Just before Thompson started at the Times, the BBC program "Newsnight" was thrust into the spotlight after news broke that the program scratched an investigative report outing famed broadcaster Jimmy Savile as a serial, child sex offender. The program stuck with its already-scheduled holiday programming and ran tributes to Savile instead. The program was axed during Thompson's tenure as director-general.

The media scandal resulted in a massive, full-blown investigation launched by UK authorities who questioned if the iconic British Broadcasting Company kept Savile's crimes secret for decades.

Thompson returned to the UK to testify at a closed-door hearing. The Post reported that Thompson was supposed to brief his current staffers on his involvement with the "Newsnight" scandal, but those conversations have not yet occurred.
