In the wake of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., athletes around the country have taken the time to pay tribute to the victims and their families. During Monday night's game against the Jets, Titans running back Chris Johnson honored the 26 victims by donning sneakers with all of their names written on them.
The cleats, shown above, also had crosses drawn in addition to "RIP SHES" -- the initials of the school where the incident took place -- and carried CJ2K to a 94-yard touchdown run in the Titans' 14-10 win over the Jets that knocked New York out of playoff contention.
Before the game, Johnson tweeted a photo of the sneakers, while MetLife Stadium observed a moment of silence in reverence to the fallen children.
Johnson spoke afterward about his decision to use the platform football affords him to honor the victims of the senseless shooting, stating that he was "Kind of heartbroken, so just something to try to give back and show tribute to those families knowing how much they hurt,” according to CBS New York. “And a situation where on Monday Night Football everybody around the world is watching.”
The aftermath of the shooting has spawned similar tributes around the NFL and the sports world. On Sunday, Giants receiver Victor Cruz wore sneakers with the name of one of the victims: 6-year-old Jack Pinto, who will reportedly be buried in Cruz's No. 80 Giants jersey.
Similarly, Kevin Durant and LeBron James also memorialized the victims on his sneakers.
