Whoopi Goldberg Demands Assault Weapons Ban (VIDEO)

WATCH: Whoopi Goldberg Demands Assault Weapons Ban

Whoopi Goldberg made a passionate call for a ban on assault weapons in the aftermath of Friday's shooting on Tuesday's "The View."

Before asking her co-hosts where they stand on gun control, Goldberg zoomed in on one element of the raging debate. "You can't justify owning an assault rifle. It's a weapon of mass destruction," she said. She noted that there was no use for assault weapons in hunting or personal defense, declaring, "There's no excuse for anyone to own one."

Joy Behar agreed. Later, Barbara Walters and Sherri Shepherd turned to the subject of violent video games. Walters wondered whether those games should be banned as well.

Goldberg said that gun control should begin with a ban on assault weapons because they made the least sense. Assault weapons, she said, were not what the country's founding fathers had in mind when they created the Second Amendment.

"We don't have a tank," Goldberg said. "You can't buy a bazooka. Why the hell can you buy a weapon of mass destruction?... That's the first thing that should be gone."

She is one of numerous media personalities who have spoken out in favor of stricter controls on guns in the aftermath of Friday's shooting. Twenty-seven people were shot and killed in a horrific shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. There were twenty elementary school children among the victims. Senator Dianne Feinstein has said that she plans to introduce a bill to ban assault weapons on the first day of Congress.
