Technological Singularity Explained: Could It Change Our Future? (VIDEO)

Is The Singularity Near?

In a nutshell: the singularity marks a moment when technology trumps the human brain, and the limitations of the mind are surpassed by artificial intelligence.

Some futurists argue that such a paradigm shift is on the horizon--and this progress of technology may even enhance our own human intelligence. How so? Well, what if we're able to merge with machines, giving us superhuman intelligence forever? Evil laugh.

Of course, I'm skeptical. It seems that Ray Kurzweil's loyal followers are forgetting one important fact: we still don't understand how the mind arises from brain. Until we have unlocked the mysteries of neuroscience and found the holy grail that is human consciousness, I'd say the singularity is far from nigh.

I had the chance to discuss it with HuffPost Live producer/host Alyona Minkovski. We were joined by James Miller, associate professor of economics at Smith College, John Rennie, former editor-in-chief of Scientific American, Matthew Herper, science and medicine reporter for Forbes, and Tom Simonite, tech editor for the Technology Review.
