City Says Big Firms May Owe Taxes -- But Also Says It Might Be Wrong

Mayor Dave Bing says he wants to go after companies that owe possibly tens of millions in unpaid taxes to the City of Detroit, but he may want to look first at the city he runs as a prime offender -- and to verify the accuracy of records accusing hundreds of companies of being behind on their taxes.

The city government itself tops the list of well-known Detroit companies and government agencies that may owe more than $17.7 million in unpaid city income taxes that were not withheld from workers' paychecks and $6 million in unpaid city business income taxes from 2000-09, according to previously unreleased lists of potential tax scofflaws that were obtained by the Free Press.
