Weekend Box Office: 'The Hobbit' Leads As 'The Guilt Trip' Flops

Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand's "Guilt Trip" is off to a rough start. The road-trip comedy made just $5.3 million on its opening weekend, keeping the movie out of the top five for the weekend box office.

With a $40 million budget, "The Guilt Trip" will have to turn things around at the box office to earn a profit. Written by Dan Fogelman ("Crazy, Stupid, Love") and directed by Anne Fletcher ("The Proposal"), "The Guilt Trip" has received mixed reviews.

After a record-breaking opening weekend, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" took the number one spot again this week. The Peter Jackson epic made $36.7 million this weekend at 4,100 theaters. "The Hobbit" has now made $149.8 million just since its Dec. 14 release.

New releases "Jack Reacher" and "This is 40" had strong opening weekends, coming in at number two and three, respectively. Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher" opened to $15.6 million in earnings across 3,352 theaters. The action movie stars Cruise as a former military police officer who is working to solve murder cases. Judd Apatow's "This is 40" saw a $12 million opening weekend across 2,912 theaters. The follow-up to "Knocked-Up," "This is 40" stars Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, and Megan Fox.

Both "Rise of the Guardians" and "Lincoln" maintained box office success, coming in at number four and five, respectively. The festive "Rise of the Guardians" made $5.9 million this weekend, bringing the animated movie's total domestic gross to $79.6 million. Daniel Day Lewis' "Lincoln" has now made a total of $116.7 million domestically, including this weekend's earnings of $5.6 million.

In other box office news, Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" had its limited release opening this weekend, showing at five theaters. The film made $410,000 across the five screens, giving each theater an average take of $82,000 for the film. "Zero Dark Thirty" opens nationwide on Jan. 11, 2013.
