Christmas Eve Shootings: No Holiday From Violence As 7 Wounded In Drive-By Gun VIolence

7 Hurt In Christmas Eve Violence

There was no holiday from shooting violence in Chicago as seven people were hurt, some critically, in gun-related incidents on Christmas Eve.

Four men were shot in the Washington Heights/Brainerd neighborhood shortly before 7:30 p.m. during an apparent drive-by, according to Tribune reports. A gunman took aim in the 9400 block of South Justine Street and struck two men multiple times, while also striking a 15-year old in the stomach, and a 17-year-old in the chest.

“This is a quiet block,” neighbor Christine Haymond told the Sun-Times after witnessing the aftermath from her window. Haymond said one of the men tried to crawl away after the shooting but kept falling.

Only half an hour later on the West Side, police responded to the 1200 block of W Washburn near University Village where a man had been shot in the head, reports the Sun-Times. The 19-year old was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

A pair of additional shootings came in the Gresham neighborhood, according to ABC Chicago. One was a 37-year old man struck in the leg and back near the 700 block of West 81st Street. Just before midnight, another man was shot in the stomach following an attempted robbery in the 8200 block of South Marshfield Avenue. The 21-year-old was reportedly in a car with other passengers as it was robbed by men with guns.

"It's just pure madness," Community Activist Andrew Holmes of the group Stop Killing Our Youth said to ABC. "It's a shame it would happen on Christmas Eve when families are supposed to be together. It's madness."
