Best Picture, Musical Or Comedy: Golden Globe Goes To Les Miserables

01/13/2013 10:41 pm ET | Updated Jan 14, 2013

The winner for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy at the 2013 Golden Globes was announced Sunday night, with "Les Miserables" besting the competition.

The musical beat out "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" and "Silver Linings Playbook" for the Hollywood Foreign Press trophy.

Tom Hooper's "Les Mis" was a big pre-broadcast favorite, buoyed on the strength of performances from Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks also star in the musical. Hooper had the actors sing live, a twist in the movie-musical world, where songs are usually recorded before the stars step in front of the camera.

French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist" won this category last year and went on to take Best Picture at the Oscar's as well. Star Jean Dujardin also took home Best Actor at the Academy Awards.

The 2013 Golden Globes were held in Los Angeles, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting. More winners are available in our liveblog at the bottom of this post. Complete coverage of television's winners is available on HuffPost TV.

Full lists of nominees are available the Golden Globes website and in HuffPost's earlier coverage.

The Golden Globes are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which was found during World War II. More about the organization can be found here. The Academy Awards are voted on by members of the film industry.

Did Jodie Foster Come Out?

More on Jodie Foster's big night at the Golden Globes:

After being introduced by Robert Downey Jr., Foster coyly said, "While I’m here being all confessional, I just have the sudden urge to say something I’ve never been able to air in public. A declaration that I’m a little nervous about. Not quite as nervous as my publicist, huh, Jennifer? But uh, you know, I’m just going to put it out there. Loud and proud. I’m going to need your support. I am -- single!"

Gaining Momentum

@ Breznican :

Most interesting theory heard at Globes: Argo gets Best Picture Oscar as rest of Academy overcompensates for directors' Affleck snub.

Staying Classy

@ AmyKinLA :

Affleck just WON'T say he's upset about the Oscar snub. Says he's a member of the Academy & so are the filmmakers he admires. #GoldenGlobes

She Beat Meryl

Remember when Jennifer Lawrence said "I beat Meryl" and everyone thought she was slamming Meryl Streep and not referencing "First Wives Club."

Flashback!

Some stars didn't make the best-dressed list. From HuffPost Style:

The 2013 Golden Globes took place on Sunday night in Los Angeles, and true to form, brought out the very best in fashion and style. As it happens, they also brought out the worst in red carpet dresses, from misplaced cutouts to heavy fabric to frocks that don't belong at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Flashback!

From the red carpet, some of the Golden Globes best-dressed celebrities. Via HuffPost Style.

The 2013 Golden Globes had us jumping for joy. Not because some of our favorite TV shows and movies won (yay, "Homeland"), but because actresses took style chances on the red carpet this year, making for an interesting awards show (and an amazing best-dressed list).

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post incorrectly listed Dakota Fanning as a cast member of "Les Miserables." Maybe in the sequel.
