Maryland Faced Snow Predictions Of Up To Four Inches, May See Snow Again On New Year's Eve

While the weather was a nonevent for most in Frederick County on Saturday, some surrounding areas saw more than 3 inches of accumulation.

According to AccuWeather meteorologist Mike Pigott, the Friday projections of up to 4 inches of snow came from a storm that ended up splitting into two pieces, one to the west of the Appalachian Mountains and one to the east and out to sea.

"Frederick got caught in the middle of that split," he said.

The most accumulation that AccuWeather recorded in the county was in Emmitsburg, which got 3 inches.

Hagerstown saw 2.2 inches fall, and 2.9 inches came down in Westminster.

Meanwhile, less than an inch piled up in Frederick, Point of Rocks and Thurmont.

Lora Rakowski, a State Highway Administration spokeswoman, said it was a quiet day on the state-owned roads for the most part, though crews were still out Saturday night monitoring for icy conditions that could result from snow melting and refreezing.

According to Frederick County Emergency Communications, no major weather-related incidents were reported.

Pigott said the next possibility for snow will be Monday evening, New Year's Eve. A weak storm moving through the area could bring flurries along with it, and some rain or snow could linger into Tuesday.

But just because there's no winter wonderland in the forecast doesn't mean harsh weather isn't to be expected. An cold front coming into the region means that Friday's daytime temperature could be just 28 degrees, Pigott said.

The warmest day of the workweek is expected to be Tuesday, when the thermometer will hover around 40 degrees. ___
