Michigan Police Force Has Shrunk 16% Since 2001

With 16% fewer police officers on the streets in Michigan than a decade ago, officials across the region say 2013 could be another tough year of budget cuts, layoffs or consolidations. The continuing challenge for appointed and elected officials: Do more with less.

This year brought many changes -- from beefed-up patrols in Detroit by Michigan State Police troopers to restructuring fire and police agencies, such as a consolidation of the fire departments in Wayne and Westland.
