Detroit Tigers' right fielder Torii Hunter provoked a harsh reaction from fans and observers on Twitter, after the Los Angeles Times quoted him as saying that an openly gay teammate would make him feel "uncomfortable."

"For me, as a Christian… I will be uncomfortable because in all my teachings and all my learning, biblically, it's not right," Hunter, who previously played for the Angels, told the newspaper. "It will be difficult and uncomfortable."

In a statement posted on Twitter, the ballplayer later said that he felt he had "been misrepresented" by the LA Times article. But that hasn't stopped supporters and critics alike from hashing out the matter in 140 emotional characters or less.
