Joseph Gordon-Levitt could transfer from Justice League to The Avengers.

According to Deadline.com, Gordon-Levitt has been added to the list of contenders vying to play Peter Quill in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie. The "Dark Knight Rises" star joins Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne and Joel Edgerton on the short list.

Deadline.com first reported Edgerton, Pace and Redmayne as possibilities late last year, but THR noted that the search had narrowed to Sturgess and Levi. Whether those two actors are still the top contenders is unclear.

If Gordon-Levitt winds up starring in "Guardians of the Galaxy" it could be considered a coup for Marvel. After all, the 31-year-old star was a key figure in "The Dark Knight Rises," a DC Comics property, and it was rumored that he could appear in the upcoming "Justice League" movie as Batman. (Gordon-Levitt's representatives promptly shot that report down.)

Directed by James Gunn, "Guardians of the Galaxy" is part of Marvel's Phase 2; the film focuses on a rag-tag group of superheros (including a genetically altered raccoon), who fight to save mankind. (Thanos, the evildoer spied at the end of "Marvel's The Avengers," is expected to be the villain.) Quill is the group's half-human, half-alien leader, and he would likely factor into other Marvel sequels as well.
