The Journal News, the newspaper that published the names and addresses of registered local gun owners in the wake of the Newtown shootings, reportedly hired armed guards to protect its office in West Nyack, N.Y., because of the backlash.

The Rockland County Times, a Journal News competitor, provided the scoop and apparently saw irony. "Guns are good for the goose but NOT for the gander," the Times wrote.

The Times cited police reports that said Journal News higher-ups were spooked by the negative reaction after the paper ran a map of licensed gun owners in Westchester and Rockland counties. So the Journal News hired heat-packing RGA Investigations to protect its Rockland County building.

The Times remarked that its rival was "armed and dangerous" in the headline, reminding readers that the Journal News defended its outing of handgun permit carriers as being in the public interest, and also favored strict gun control in its editorials. (Critics of the move argue that the list invades privacy and endangers both the gun owners and families that don't own firearms.) For more details, visit the Rockland County Times.

Reuters reported this week that Putnam County would defy a News Journal request for information about pistol license holders there.
