Columbine Survivor: Sandy Hook Students Need To Be Together (VIDEO)

As the students of Sandy Hook Elementary return to class, they will start to feel a sense of belonging once again, according to one survivor of the deadly 1999 shooting at Columbine High School.

Kiki Leyba was a teacher at Columbine at the time of the shooting. On HuffPost Live Friday, Leyba reflected on teaching at the transition location, Chatfield High School, after the incident, and eventually returning to Columbine when it reopened. Leyba said teachers and students eagerly anticipated being reunited and that it was very much a part of the healing process.

"It was a great scenario that we got to be at Chatfield," Leyba told HuffPost Live. "We weren't ready to go back [to Columbine], but we were ready to be back together."

Sandy Hook Elementary students returned to classes Thursday inside a former middle school in the nearby town of Monroe, Conn. Desks and chairs were moved there from the former building. Their classroom walls were also painted the same colors and hung with the same pictures.

Leyba is one of several Columbine survivors who has spoken out after the shooting at Sandy Hook. Crystal Woodman Miller, another Columbine survivor, shared her story of recovery with Sandy Hook survivors at a church in Sudbury, Conn., this week.

Leyba told HuffPost Live he and others from Columbine would love the opportunity to speak to Sandy Hook staff and offer their support going forward.
