Middle School Dance Begins Couple's Sweet Love Story (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: Awkward 6th Grade Dance Turns Into Marriage

Remember the sweaty, uncomfortable awkwardness of middle school dances? When "slow dancing" consisted of a boy and girl swaying together in the school gym while standing as far apart as possible and avoiding eye contact?

Jeffrey and Alexa Schultz's first dance went something like that, but their relationship didn't end there. On Thursday, Jeffrey posted a photo on Reddit of himself and Alexa awkwardly dancing together in 6th grade -- alongside a photo of them on their wedding day.

Jeffrey told HuffPost Weddings that he and Alexa met when they were around 13 years old, and learned they both had crushes on each other one day during recess. They casually "dated" from 7th grade until their freshman year of high school, though Jeffrey said they were so shy they barely talked to each other -- even during that middle school dance.

"We probably said one word to each other during [the dance] and when it was over, probably ran back over to our group of friends all giddy. That's just how we were for a while, super shy!" Jeffrey said.

The two began dating again during their junior year of high school, and were married four years later in Wisconsin in August 2011.

The Schultz's love story echoes that of another middle school couple whose love letter was displayed at their wedding 22 years later.
