Amy Bessey Allegedly Tried To Murder Husband, Had 'Unnatural' Relationship With Son: Police

Woman Charged In Drive-By Plot Had 'Unnatural' Relationship With Son: Cops

A woman accused of plotting the attempted drive-by murder of her estranged husband had an "unnatural" romantic relationship with her son, police said.

Amy Bessey, 42, was arrested Friday by Las Vegas police, nearly two months after the failed hit on her husband, 49-year-old Robert Bessey, according to a police report obtained by The Huffington Post.

Police say that Bessey, also known as Amy Pearson, orchestrated the family-run murder plot. She's accused of enlisting the couple's son, Michael Bessey, 21, and her brother, Richard Pearson, 39, to carry out the attack on her soon-to-be divorced husband.

But Robert Bessey survived the Nov. 14, 2012 incident.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Robert Bessey was hit in the neck by a shot fired from a gold SUV that pulled up next to his car at about 4:30 a.m., but he survived. He recognized the SUV as belonging to his brother-in-law's girlfriend.

Authorities charged Michael Bessey and Richard Pearson in the botched murder last year.

"That's what happens when you send a boy to do [a] woman's work," Amy Bessey supposedly told her sister-in-law at one point, according to the report. The sister-in-law also told investigators that Bessey previously offered her son's ex-girlfriend $50,000 to poison her husband.

The mother and her son had an "unnatural" relationship, according to police. A witness said the pair frequented nightclubs together and would "grab each other's buttocks."

Police believe the plan was possibly motivated by the potential payout of a $250,000 life insurance policy plan on Robert Bessey. The arrest report also documents Robert's alleged abuse of his wife and his adopted son.

Bessey is charged with attempted murder, attempted battery and conspiracy to commit murder.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Bessey offered her sister-in-law money to poison her husband. Language has been changed to clarify the sources of money at stake in the event of Bessey's death, and prior references to Michael Bessey as Amy Bessey's adopted son have been removed (he is her biological son, adopted by Robert Bessey).
