Miami Hurricanes Basketball A Top 10 Team -- But Only According To Computers

Are The Computers Right?

CORAL GABLES -- The humans aren't too impressed, but the computers really seem to like the Miami basketball team.

Entering Thursday night's game at North Carolina, the Hurricanes (10-3) are ranked as high as No. 6 in one RPI projection. Playing one of the most challenging non-conference schedules paid off in the measure used heavily by the NCAA tournament selection committee.

Games with Arizona and Michigan State (a win by the way) went a long way. Even the 57-55 loss to Indiana State boosted the strength of schedule since the Sycamores (9-5) are ranked 25th in CBSSports.com's RPI projection.

Here's a quick survey of the different computer measures of success with Miami's standing.

Site... UM rank... Sched. rank

RealtimeRPI... 6... 3

CBS RPI... 7... 3

Rivals RPI... 7... 3

Sagarin... 19... 13

Pomeroy... 21... n/a

Interestingly, North Carolina won't be quite the boost to the strength of schedule as in the past. The Tar Heels are No. 44 in most projections of the RPI after a 10-4 start.

Duke, a team the Canes will see twice before tournament play, sit atop all rankings with a perfect 15-0 record.

And if you were wondering, Miami is a 6.5-point underdog at North Carolina tonight. How do you feel about the team's direction? Leave a comment below.
