El conjunto del Manchester United sufrió en el clásico del futbol inglés, pero al final logró llevarse los tres puntos en Old Trafford, después de derrotar apuradamente a la escuadra del Liverpool 2-1, que lo mantiene más líder que nunca en la Premier League.
La victoria llevó al equipo de Alex Ferguson a sumar 55 unidades y a obtener su triunfo número 18 de la temporada, además de que su goleador Robin Van Persie sumó su anotación número 18; mientras que el cuadro rival se quedó en el octavo lugar con 31 puntos, y su mejor anotador, Luis Suárez, no sumó y se estancó con 16 goles.
El partido tuvo un inicio muy trabado por parte de ambos conjuntos, pues se jugó con mucha intensidad en el medio campo, pero poco a poco la escuadra del Manchester United empezó a ser más atrevida y por medio de Robin van Persie consiguió su primera llegada.
El trato del balón fue mejor por el cuadro local y en una gran jugada al minuto 18 logró abrir el marcador en los botines del delantero holandés Van Persie, quien definió de pierna izquierda, muy a su estilo, un gran centro Patrice Evra por la banda izquierda.
Los Diablos siguieron siendo mejores, pero no lograron reflejarlo en el marcador; sin embargo, estuvieron a punto de hacerlo al minuto 44 por conducto de Van Persie, luego de que el atacante de taquito rematara un centro de Rafael, pero en la última línea salvó un zaguero enemigo.
El segundo tiempo fue más intenso, pues Liverpool salió con una mejor propuesta ofensiva con el ingreso de Daniel Sturridge, pero cuando mejor jugaba, Manchester consiguió el segundo en pelota parada al 53', luego de que Van Persie cobrara falta fuera del área grande por el lado izquierdo para la llegada de Evra, quien con fuerte cabezazo mandó al fondo la pelota, a pesar de que en el trayecto fue desviada por su compañero Vidic.
Pero el equipo visitante logró reaccionar rápidamente, pues al 57' logró descontar la ventaja con el gol de Sturridge, quien contrarremató un disparo fuera del área de Steven Gerrard, donde el portero De Gea, luego de una gran parada, se la dejó a modo para que solamente la empujara.
A partir de este momento el juego se convirtió de ida y vuelta en ambas porterías, teniendo más dominio territorial el conjunto visitante, pues poco a poco comenzó a echar a su terreno de juego al Manchester, que perdió la brújula en el medio campo.
El veterano estratega Alex Ferguson renunció al ataque con los cambios que hizo, pero fortaleció su medio campo, pero cinco minutos del final se perdió Sturridge el gol de la igualada, luego e quedar solo y mandar su disparo por encima de la meta de De Gea.
En los minutos finales, la escuadra del Manchester logró contener los embates del rival, incluso estuvo cerca de conseguir el tercero en los botines de Van Persie, pero el marcador ya no se movió y quedó sentenciado el marcador con el triunfo diablo.
