WASHINGTON -- Eight dogs and five cats made homeless by Superstorm Sandy arrived in the nation's capital on Monday.

The pets came to the Washington Animal Rescue League from a temporary emergency shelter set up by the ASPCA in New York, WARL spokesperson Pam Townsend told The Huffington Post. "It’s my understanding that they were given up by owners who had lost everything basically and knew they couldn’t care for them."

Townsend said that the dogs and cats have been given New York-related names, like Manhattan, Soho, Tribeca and Lady Liberty.

Tuesday, the dogs and cats were given medical exams -- a message on the WARL Facebook page said some could be available for adoption as soon as this weekend.
