Morgan Park, Simeon H.S. Coaches Suspended After Postgame Shooting Death

CPS Coaches Suspended Following Fatal Post-Game Shooting

CHICAGO — Chicago Public Schools suspended Simeon and Morgan Park high school basketball coaches for four games in the wake of a fatal shooting after a game they coached last week.

Simeon's Robert Smith and Morgan Park's Nick Irvin were suspended for unprofessional conduct "through both their words and actions" at the Jan. 16 game at Chicago State University, according to a statement from CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett.

"Coaches in Chicago Public Schools must serve as mentors, instructors and role models for our students both on and off the court or field of competition," Byrd-Bennett said. "The children under their charge take their cues from them on what is acceptable behavior and what is not."
