Harry Irwin, 93, Allegedly Murdered Wife, 95: 'Yes, I Killed Her And Then Killed Myself. Why Am I Awake?'

'Yes, I Killed Her And Then Killed Myself. Why Am I Awake?'

Harry Irwin seemed surprised to be alive when medical professionals treated him for self-inflicted stab wounds.

"Yes, I killed her and then killed myself. Why am I awake?" Irwin allegedly told a paramedic with the Kansas City Fire Department, NBC News reports.

Police say the 93-year-old Missouri man fatally stabbed his ailing 95-year-old wife, Grace Irwin, before turning the knife on himself.

Irwin told authorities that his wife had been "arguing and screaming at him all night and he couldn't take it anymore," according to court documents, the Kansas City Star reports.

Around 6:30 Wednesday morning, Irwin called his daughter and instructed her to visit the house at 9 a.m., according to CBS News. When she arrived, Irwin's daughter found her mother lying in a bloody bed. Her unconscious father was still holding a knife.

“Given the facts, a murder charge was warranted,” said Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters-Baker in a statement, according to Fox4KC. “No victim deserves someone else deciding when they will die.”

Harry Irwin remained in the hospital Wednesday night in serious but stable condition, KCTV reports. He is charged with second-degree murder.
