Animal Love Photos: National Geographic Previews Images Of Animal Affection

LOOK: These Animals Love Each Other

It may not be springtime just yet, but love is certainly in the air!

In a preview for executive editor Rachel Buchholz's upcoming book, True Love: 24 Surprising Stories of Animal Affection, National Geographic revealed nine photos of animals in love -- from sibling affection to the love between a momma dog and her brood.

While many of the loving creatures photographed are related (Who doesn't swoon over pics of adoring animal parents and babies?), there are a few stories of unlikely animal friendships between inter-species pals.

“These tales are extremely popular, and it’s easy to see why," Buchholz writes in the book's introduction. "If animals can show kindness and love, surely humans can as well.”

Earlier this month, National Geographic also announced the winners of its annual photo contest, awarding the top prize to photographer Ashley Vincent of Chonburi, Thailand, for his image of a tigress named Busaba shaking herself dry.

January also marks a monumental anniversary for National Geographic. Founded in 1888, the society has published stunning photos from around the world for 125 years.
