Bubble-Wrap Popping World Record: Hawthorne High School Raises Money For Sandy Hook Victims (VIDEO)

Hawthorne High School students and faculty snapped, crackled, and popped their way to a new Guinness World Record for most people simultaneously popping Bubble Wrap, the Star-Ledger reported.

On Monday -- Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day -- 366 people (including one bear mascot) stomped and shuffled on 8,000 square feet of Bubble Wrap for two minutes in the Hawthorne, N.J. school, according to the Associated Press. But they didn't do it just to put off studying.

Barry Cohen, the school's principal, told BBC News that the stunt doubled as a way to raise money for the Sandy Hook Elementary School fund in Newtown, Conn. The money will go to victims' families in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting in which 20 students and six faculty members lost their lives.

The record was popped in Bubble Wrap's hometown. According to Stevens Institute of Technology, in 1957 the popular packaging product was invented when two engineers failed at creating a type of plastic wallpaper in their Hawthorne, N.J. garage.

Fifty-six years later, people still enjoy a good pop. The record is the first of its kind, but Kimberly Partrick, Guinness World Records adjudicator, sees bubble-popping becoming a trend.

"I feel like this will eventually become a very popular record category," she told the AP, "because everyone enjoys popping Bubble Wrap."
