Tim Dodd, Photographer, Snaps Winter Scene From The Top Of The Empire State Building (PHOTO)

This breathtaking New York winter scene almost didn't happen. Photographer Tim Dodd planned to ascend the Empire State Building with his girlfriend for a sunset shot of the city, but as the couple set out, conditions turned wintry.

"My girlfriend didn't want to go up and went shopping, but I figured, what the hell, might as well check it out anyway," Dodd wrote in an e-mail to The Huffington Post.

Although the light snow made for disappointing visibility, it ended up transforming an ordinary situation into something magical.

Dodd, who splits his time between weddings, travel photography, and the odd incredibly poignant human interest photoessay, posted his Empire State Building winter scene to Reddit on January 28, three days after he took the photo. It received more than 2,900 upvotes by time of this writing, and attracted a lot of interested commenters.

"Had my tripod taken by security on the way up. Made use of the railing at the top and held really still!" Dodd wrote when asked how he achieved the shot.

It just goes to show that sometimes the best New York moments are improvised.

This isn't the first New York cityscape to go viral recently. In July, photographer Ryan Brenizer snapped an ominous panorama of the Manhattan skyline as a tumultuous storm system swept across the city.
