White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that President Barack Obama was looking forward to seeing Giffords and her husband, retired Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, the AP reports. Carney said people at the White House were "heartened" to see Giffords speak out on gun violence.

"Speaking is difficult but I need to say something important: violence is a problem. Too many children are dying," Giffords said during her opening remarks.

"Be bold. Be courageous. Americans are counting on you," Giffords urged the committee.
