Nancy Brinker, Susan G. Komen For The Cure Founder, Raises Money For Gay Rights With Son

On the heels of a media frenzy, Nancy Brinker has now added gay rights to her activism repertoire, reports The Washington Post.

The founder of popular breast cancer foundation Susan G. Komen for the Cure hosted a reception for Lambda Legal at her Georgetown home. She joined the organization along with her gay son Eric to help celebrate its 40th anniversary and to prepare for Supreme Court arguments in favor of same-sex marriage this spring.

“Having the most supportive mom in the world, I didn’t have to twist her arm very hard to get her involved,” Eric, who just became publicly open about his sexuality, told the Washington Post. The 37-year old said his family has never had an issue with his sexual orientation, so “it’s very sad to us when we hear stories of people whose parents reject them.”

Last year, Susan resigned from her CEO position after backlash from a decision to cut off grants to Planned Parenthood for mammograms. Komen later reversed the decision and said that it would restore the funding.
