After a sudden whiteout in wintery Detroit Thursday diminished visibility "in a matter of seconds," a 7-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl from Windsor, Ontario and one adult died in a massive accident on I-75. In the wake of the accident, however, one photographer caught a stirring moment between a firefighter and his rescuee.

As emergency responders worked at the accident site, Detroit News photographer David Coates snapped a photo after a firefighter rescued a forlorn-looking dog from one of the cars.

According to the Associated Press, rescue trucks stopped at each vehicle searching for survivors and offering support.

The pileup near the Springwells exit on the southbound side of the freeway involved about 30 cars and left 20 more people injured. Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said conditions went from "clear to total whiteout in a matter of seconds."

"All of a sudden, they couldn't see anymore," he said.

The weather conditions have made for a day of dangerous driving in the Midwest. Further north on the US-23 freeway, just south of I-75 in Genesee County, at least 20 cars, including several semis, were involved in another snow-related pileup. The accident occurred just hours after the I-75 accident was reported in Detroit. Police at the scene said some people were injured in the accident, according to WXYZ.

Further west, a pileup on I-94 at Paw Paw involved eight tractor-trailers and six cars. Another incident on I-70 near Indianapolis resulted in a 40-car crash.
