Phil Mickelson Shoots 60 At Phoenix Open Round 1 After Final Putt For 59 Lips Out (VIDEO)

"As painful a 60 as you're ever going to see."

That's how Golf Channel announcer Rich Lerner described Phil Mickelson's amazing first round at TPC Scottsdale.

Mickelson came oh so close to shooting an astounding 59 in the opening round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Needing to sink a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole, Mickelson's ball was on track but just lipped out.

"I thought it was in," said Rickie Fowler, Mickelson's playing partner, per USA Today Sports. "Obviously Phil thought it was, too, and just snuck out there at the end."

The last golfer to shoot a 59 was Stuart Appleby at the Greenbrier Classic in 2010. Paul Goydos had reached the feat a month prior at the John Deere Classic. Mickelson would have been the sixth golfer ever to shoot a 59.

Mickelson raised his putter as the ball rolled toward the cup, seemingly thinking he had shot a 59. But as the ball curled around the cup, he crouched over in disbelief and put his arms on his head.

"The last 6 feet it was right on glide slope. it should've been right in the middle. The thing is I'm ecstatic to shoot 60, I'm excited and so forth. But you don't get chances to shoot 59 very often and to have that putt on-line, I'm kind of mortified that that didn't go in because you just don't get those chances very often," Mickelson said after Round 1, via Golfweek. "I couldn't of envisioned what side of the hole it would've missed on when it was a foot out. It looked like it was right in the middle and it didn't go in. But I hit a ton of putts today, I hit a lot of great shots and I drive it very well."

Mickelson settled for a 60, tying his career PGA low. Surprisingly, his previous PGA 60 also came at TPC Scottsdale in 2005, per GolfChannel.

Not often is a golfer "mortified" by a 60.
