Chris Christie Weight Defense From David Axelrod: 'Leave The Poor Guy Alone!'

David Axelrod, who previously served as a senior advisor to President Barack Obama, came to Republican Gov. Chris Christie's defense on Friday after former White House physician Connie Mariano expressed concern about his weight.

Mariano told CNN in an interview on Tuesday that she was "worried about this man dying in office" should he make a run for the 2016 presidential elections. Christie responded to Mariano's concerns on Wednesday, saying she "should shut up" unless she gave him a physical exam herself, the Associated Press reported.

Christie has a long history of confronting comments about his weight. In 2009, a television ad issued by former New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine claimed Christie "threw his weight around." Christie denounced the ad, calling it "silly," The New York Times reported.

In an interview with ABC News in 2011, Christie said that people had a "prejudice" and he "can't do anything about that." Christie said at the time that he was trying to be as healthy as possible, and regularly visits the doctor.

"My blood pressure's fine, my cholesterol is fine," he told ABC News. "I'm in good physical shape in terms of those indicators. But I have to lose weight and I get it."
