WHAT IS IT?
Founded in 1919, the Cleveland-based Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company got its start making parts for the era's growing automotive industry. But soon, the firm diversified, turning out bicycles and toys—a smart move that saved the company once the Depression hit. In 1937, industrial designer Viktor Schreckengost came on board to create pedal cars, bikes, and toy cars—including this 21-inch-long bus, sold under Murray's Steelcraft brand. The plaything was modeled after a cross-country night coach and resourcefully shaped from scrapped sheet-metal car fenders. Nowadays, mint-condition miniature vehicles designed by Schreckengost fetch upwards of $2,000. This example shows a bit of rust, but still drives away with one impressive appraisal.
